  • Due to the shelter in place order that went into effect on March 24, 2020 no construction work will be allowed at this time. Residents of all towns are ordered to remain at their place of residence. To read the shelter in place order in full go to the Town’s website at www.edgartown-ma.us,

    All active construction sites shall be secured to prevent unauthorized entry, damage to equipment and/or work in progress, and to protect public safety. This order is in effect through April 7, 2020 at noon. No permits will be issued until this order is lifted.

    No work of any kind is to be performed on any building site.

    Any emergency work will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please call the Building Inspector’s office at 508-627-6115 or email rmilne@edgartown-ma.us and we will discuss the situation with you, as well as authorize the procurement of lumber and supplies necessary for the repair.

    This order is enforceable by the Edgartown Police Department and the Edgartown Board of Health, and any contractor who does not comply will be subject to fines.

    We understand that this is an extremely difficult situation. We are heeding the advice of our public health officials and hospital. We appreciate your cooperation, and will inform you of any new information as it develops.

    The Building Inspector's office encompasses all permits and inspections involving building construction and renovation. This includes all building permits, new construction, additions, alterations, renovations, minor alterations, porches, decks, garages, barns, sheds, swimming pools, tennis courts, fences over 6' in height, and any other structures, as well as demolition.

Additionally, the office has charge over permits and inspections in the following areas: plumbing, gas, wiring, oil burners, Certificates of Compliance for smoke detectors, wood or other solid fuel burning appliances, trailer permits, sign permits, Certificates of Inspection, Certificates of Occupancy.

The Building Inspector is also the Zoning Inspector. Questions concerning zoning issues, such as property line setbacks, allowed uses, specially permitted uses and prohibited uses should be addressed to him. He also has jurisdiction over zoning violations, and enforcement of conditions imposed by the granting of Special Permits by the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Board.

Miscellaneous other issues/topics are the purview of the Building Inspector's Office. These include abandoned vehicles, flood plain questions, sign permits, procedural questions concerning Special Permits/Variances and handicapped access regulations.
